Union Hotel and a Nasty Hangover

It all started on thurday night with just a touch too much Zumwohl Plum Vodka and Serefino Fortified Shiraz. Yes, yes a dangerous mix, though having said that the plum vodka goes really well with cranberry juice... Anyway so I woke up yesterday morning feeling less than sprightly and rather sorry for myself.  So much so in fact that BombGuy had to take charge and drive me to my last day at work where I acheived nothing (not that I was planning to!) except eating way too much morning tea and clearing out the last stuff from my office. So long Tai Poutini Polytechnic.
BombGuy came at the appointed time to retrieve my sorry ass from the aforementioned place of work and whisk me off to the planned lunch at The Union Hotel, however due to a slight overindulgence in savouries this was postponed to later on and it was home for a small nana nap, some serious movies watching and some post alcohol recovery.
So Later .. crawled through the shower, put on something less slept in and headed of for a very late lunch (or dinner if you will) at The Union.
Right so The Union, its a pub with a carvery, its very popular and its reliable, nothing ever changes and you know exactly what you are going to get. From the dreadful dining room decor to the brown seventies wall paper and tiles that can be seen in the servery and kitchen area, right through to the menu that is so old hat that you can plan your meal weeks in advance and know that its going to be available. Even some of the staff have been there since the dawn of time. All this said though its really good.  The prices are so reasonable its not funny and you can get your meals in full size (giant) or half size (still very generous and really enough for anyone) You can have chips and salad or Veges - which are incidently always the same, with or without gravy.
BombGuy was as predictable as the menu and went for a half ham steak with chips, gravy and hold the salad. I was also boring and went for a half roast pork with apple sauce, chips, gravy and a salad. Very very good.. if you're in Greymouth go try it!
There was one thing that was different (sometimes they do chuck in the odd curve ball, not often though) and that was the cheesecake that was boldly sitting in the dessert section, amoungst the common as muck  pavlova and weird jelly ensemble.  We skipped the complimentary soup (always vegetable with too much salt) so we could try it.
I dont know who was responsible for this but I really wanted to hug them afterwards.
Caramel Crunchie Cheesecake - Light, Fluffy not overly sweet and so fresh it was amazing. It was a chilled cake as opposed to a baked cheesecake and very pleasing that the base was very thin and the cake bit was very big. There was a generous amount of crushed Crunchie bars through the whole cake and it had gone pleasantly gooey and added a nice level of texture. A completely awesome cheesecake experience, well done the Union -  We salute you!

Verdict
Mains :  BombGuy - Hamsteak and Chips 3.5/5
The Brunette - Pork Roast and Chips 3.5/5
Dessert:  Caramel Crunchy Cheesecake, both of us rated this 5/5 and great effort on the           massive splodge of whipped cream ...YUM!
