Pike River and DP1

BombGuy and I woke this morning to brilliant sunshine.. very very nice. Sadness was about the house as today was the first anniversary of the Pike River Tragedy, which I am sure you are aware claimed the lives of 29 men who were just doing their jobs.  Sadly one of the 29 was Sam Mackie who was our friend and next door neighbour.  We still miss him. Humourous, quiet and an avid trainspotter. We walked down to Brunner Mine this morning and threw a stone in the river for both Sam and Andrew, his friend and housemate who died a year earlier. Then this afternoon we attended the Memorial Service and went down to Sams house and left a wind-up toy train on the doorstep and a car for Andrew.  Its too much of a beautiful day for sadness, but thats the way life is sometimes.

BombGuy and I have a friend staying - Mr Brown from Out of Town. So when we ventured out he came with us - and todays mission we had decided on Cafe 124 in Greymouth, but having looked in there it was quite busy and besides that BombGuy had been distracted by the sign for DP1 advertising burgers, muffins and CAKE.  So we left cafe 124 and head round the corner for DP1. Sadly the cake section was empty apart from, you guessed it, gooey chocolate slab cake. Hmmm so cake was quickly decided against as I was gooey chocolate slab caked out from last weekend. So what else did they have?  Great service, good start! The lady behind the counter was quick to point out that everything on the menu boards was made fresh to order and she would leave us to decide ..nice, perfect in fact.  Burgers, there had ben talk of McDonalds, but this was quickly abandoned in the face of tasty freshly handmade burgers.
BombGuy and I had the chicken snitzel and Mr Brown from Out of Town went for the beef with an egg, then BombGuy added pineapple to his and I kept mine stock standard. Flat whites were ordered, which arrived swiftly. Served at the perfect temperature, good crema in evidence and the most velvety milk I have ever seen, and the taste was great, thick creamy and rich. The beans however did let it down a little but not too much.

Very shortly, 10-15mins at the most, the burgers arrived. EPIC! on a plate held together with a big metal skewer.. Every thing was there, beetroot, tomato, red onion, big fresh bun, Chicken, sauce Oh God Yum.. Mr Brown from Out of Towns Beef number sported the largest patty I think I've seen in quite some years, and he was quick to note the taste and quality was something he hadnt had in quite some time.

BombGuy Attacks!

Beef Burger

Chicken Snitzel

My Brown from Out of Town contemplates the neccesity for a dislocating jaw!

Oh I forgot to mention that I ordered chips .. I am a fried potato addict, In fact I dont think I know anyone that can turn down a potato chip, and burgers and chips are like rhubarb and custard, they just go together.
The chips arrived and they were superb! Served with aioli they were crisp, hot, salted to just the right degree and not at all greasy, Possibly cooked in the cleanest oil anywhere. These chips were melt in the mouth perfection.

So Chips and Burgers dispatched the verdict was in:
Coffee 4.5/5 all round
BombGuy - Chicken Snitzel w Pineapple 5/5
Mr Brown from Out of Town - Beef w Egg 5/5
The Brunette - Chicken Snitzel 5/5
And the Chips we all voted 5/5

Top of the line stuff.. well done DP1.. we'll be back

Cheers,
The Brunette.
